FACIAL PROCEDURES

Brow / Forehead Lift

The effects of aging are inevitable, and, often, the brow and forehead area show the first signs. The skin begins to lose its elasticity. Sun, wind, and the pull of gravity all affect the face, resulting in frown lines, wrinkling across the forehead, and an increasing heaviness of the eyebrows. Even people in their thirties may have faces that look older than their years. You’re tired, angry, or sad expression may not reflect how you actually feel. As a result, many people have opted for a procedure known as the forehead lift. Based on variations in how men and women age and on new advances in medical technology, different methods are used to perform this procedure.

If you are wondering how a forehead lift could improve your appearance, you need to know how these procedures are performed and what you can expect.

Everyone says I look great but they can’t tell what changed. Dr. Jones did an amazing job with a subtle lift. - Patient CJ

PROCEDURE

A forehead lift, most commonly known as a browlift, is a surgical procedure that restores a more youthful appearance to the area above the eyes. The procedure improves lateral hoods and horizontal lines and furrows that can make a person appear angry, sad or tired.

Prior to the procedure, an examination of your facial structure, the condition of your skin, hairline, and the muscle activity when you assume various facial expressions, is necessary to determine which surgical approach will best achieve your cosmetic goals.

THE METHOD(S)

Essentially, Dr. Jones removes the skin and tissues affected by furrowing or drooping to smooth the forehead and raise the eyebrows. Depending on your specific needs, the classic surgical method is performed for a smoother forehead skin within two to four hours.

During a classic forehead lift, a coronal incision will be used, as it follows a “headphone-like” pattern, beginning around ear level and running across the top of the forehead and down the other side of the head.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a non-smoking adult is overall good health.  A forehead lift is typically performed on individuals within the 40-60 age range to reduce the visible effects of aging. However, it is common for younger candidates to seek a forehead lift if they have developed furrows or frown lines due to stress or muscle activity.

RECOVERY / POSTOPERATIVE

  • Temporary numbness and discomfort around the incision
  • Up to seven days of swelling for approximately one week
  • Bandages removed one or two days post surgery
  • Stitches or clips will be removed within two weeks
  • Resume work or school in one week to 10 days
  • Vigorous physical activity should be limited for several weeks

Chin Implant

Chin implant or “chin augmentation” is a fairly common procedure and often accompanies rhinoplasty, a face lift, or cheek implants.  A chin implant can dramatically improve your face and profile. Many men and women, who want to improve the definition of their face, can now do so through chin augmentation.

After my surgery, I wanted to take pictures everyday to show off my new look and side profile. – Patient AL

PROCEDURE

Chin augmentation, or chin implant surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour. Chin implants are made of solid silicone material and come in a variety of sizes and shapes.

METHOD(S)

Chin implants are typically placed through an incision made inside the lower lip or through a natural skin crease located beneath the chin. Dr. Jones will select the implant that would best enhance your appearance and insert the implant into a pocket created over the front of the jawbone.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a non-smoking healthy individual.  The candidate will most often have a “weak chin” and wish to create definition in their chin or a stronger facial structure.

RECOVERY / POST OPERATIVE

  • Temporary discomfort in the chin area for several days post surgery
  • Sutures removed within one week
  • Swelling and discoloration subside within several days
  • Resume light activities in three to four days
  • Resume strenuous activities within one to two weeks

Ear Surgery

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, can correct a defect in the ear structure and improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear.  As a child, protruding or disfigured ears can be bothersome.  Ear surgery can create a natural shape, while bringing balance and proportion to the ears and face. Correction of even minor deformities can have profound benefits to the appearance and self-esteem.

The best experience and decision I’ve made thus far. – Patient PB

PROCEDURES

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is usually performed to set prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears.  Ear surgery can improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear. It can correct a defect in the ear structure that is present at birth that becomes apparent with development or it can treat misshapen ears caused by injury.

METHOD(S)

Depending on the technique and case, the ear surgery procedure takes two to three hours. With one of the more common techniques, Dr. Jones will make a small incision in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. He will then sculpt the cartilage and bend it back toward the head. Non-removable stitches may be used to help maintain the new shape.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Children who are healthy, without a life-threatening illness or untreated chronic ear infections are good candidates for ear surgery.  However, the child must be cooperative and follow instructions well.  Teenagers and adults who are non-smokers with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for ear surgery are also good candidates for ear surgery.

RECOVERY / POSTOPERATIVE

  • Temporary discomfort for three to five days post surgery
  • Temporary head dressing to protect the ears
  • Stitches typically removed or dissolved within a week
  • Adults may return back to work in approximately five days post surgery
  • Children may return back to school in approximately seven days post surgery

Eyelid Surgery / Blepharoplasty

Every year, one hundred thousand men and women choose blepharoplasty to improve the way they look. Droopy eyelids can make you look older and can also impair vision. Blepharoplasty corrects these problems and also removes puffiness and bags under the eyes that make you look worn and tired. This procedure cannot alter dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, nor can it change sagging eyebrows. Though blepharoplasty is often performed as a single procedure, you may also require a browlift, facelift, or skin resurfacing to achieve the best results.

I always appeared sleepy, but now my eyes are brighter and I look more alert. – Patient OS

THE PROCEDURE

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, removes the excess fat and drooping skin improves from the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both to rejuvenate your appearance.  The removal of fat deposits minimizes bags under the eyes and tightens the lower eyelid skin.

Variations of blepharoplasty include:

  • Upper eyelid surgery, which removes excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids.
  • Lower eyelid surgery, which removes excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid as well as correct droopiness of the lower eyelids; and bags under the eyes can be corrected by blepharoplasty.

METHOD(S)

Eyelid surgery usually takes from one to three hours, while the patient is under local or general anesthesia. Dr. Jones typically makes incisions in the creases of the upper lids and below the lashes of the lower lids. The incision lines for eyelid surgery are designed for scars to be well concealed within the eyelid region. Through these incisions, Dr. Jones will separate the skin from fatty tissue and muscle, remove excess fat and trim drooping skin and muscle. In instances where no skin must be removed, Dr. Jones may make an incision just below the lower lash line to remove excess fat, skin, etc.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for eyelid surgery is a non-smoking healthy individual.  The candidate should not have any predetermined serious eye conditions. The procedure is typically performed on adult men and women who have healthy facial tissue and muscles.  It is also important that the patient also has a realistic goal for improving of the eyelids and surrounding area.

RECOVERY / POSTOPERATIVE

  • Temporary eyelid swelling, bruising, irritation or dry eyes
  • Results of eyelid surgery will appear gradually as swelling and bruising subside
  • Temporary discomfort and irritation at the incision sites is possible
  • Stitches will be removed two days to a week post surgery
  • Avoid strenuous activities for two weeks post surgery

Facelift / Neck Lift

A facelift/neck lift or “rhytidectomy” addresses the negative effects of aging.  As we mature with time the soft tissues of our cheeks and neck descend with aging and gravity.  The aging process affects individuals at different times; therefore, there is no “right time” to start thinking about a facelift.

I was nervous about the outcome of a facelift, but Dr. Jones was patient with me and made me feel comfortable. I love the results. – Patient DS

PROCEDURE

Depending on the degree of change you’d like to see, facelift procedures are often combined with neck contouring, chin implants, or eyelid rejuvenation to restore facial appearance.  The procedure creates a more youthful, rested appearance and does not change the patient’s natural facial feature.

Generally the procedure can take up to 3 hours and improve visible signs of aging, such as:

  • Fat that has fallen or is displaced
  • Deep creases along the nose extending to the corner of the mouth
  • Sagging in the midface
  • Loss of muscle tone in the lower face may create jowls
  • Loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw

METHOD(S)

During a traditional facelift Dr. Jones begins with incisions in the hairline at the temples, continues around the ear and ends in the lower scalp. Fat may be sculpted or redistributed from the face, jowls and neck. Then, the underlying tissue is repositioned. Often times the deeper layers of the face and the muscles are also lifted.

Skin is redraped over the uplifted contours and excess skin is trimmed away. A second incision under the chin may be necessary to further improve an aging neck. Once healed, the incision lines from a facelift are well concealed within the hairline and in the natural contours of the face and ear.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a non-smoking man or woman who is physically healthy.  It is equally as important for the candidate to have a positive outlook and specific, but realistic goals in mind for the improvement of their appearance.

RECOVERY / POST OPERATIVE

  • Minimal pain and discomfort
  • Stitches are removed within one week
  • Swelling and discoloration subside within two weeks
  • Resume normal activities in 10 to 14 days and
  • Resume exercise and strenuous activities in two to three weeks

Lip Augmentation

Lip augmentation assists in achieving facial balance and harmony. Lips that are too large can affect daily routine habits such as eating, talking, or performing good dental hygiene. Lip augmentations have become increasingly popular as more patients are now interested in enhancing their facial features.

I didn’t realize I could make my lips smaller until I visited Lexington Plastic Surgeons. They did such a wonderful job at making it look natural. - Patient GJ

PROCEDURE

Lip augmentations achieve permanent results and improve lip shape and size to the patient’s desired look and in proportion with their face.  Lip augmentation can also be done in collaboration with rhinoplasty, facelift & implants.

Lip augmentation is effective & commonly performed on the following patients:

  • Those who desire smaller lips
  • Botched lip augmentation cases from too much silicone
  • People born with congenital defects such as cleft lips
  • Accident or burn injury cases that healed with excess tissues

METHOD(S)

Generally performed under local anesthetic, depending upon the extensiveness of the procedure, lip augmentation can take one to two hours.  The incision is typically made inside the lip and reduced by removing a small section of tissue from the inside of the lip.  The incision is then closed with sutures.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate should be in overall good health and a nonsmoker.  Candidates should also have realistic goals and expectations of achieving their overall facial balance.

RECOVERY / POST OPERATIVE

  • Temporary discomfort
  • Swelling and bruising subsides within one to two weeks
  • Patients should maintain a soft diet for two to three days post procedure
  • Return to work in two to three days
  • Resume strenuous normal activities within one week

Nose Surgery / Rhinoplasty

Every year, half a million people who are interested in improving the appearance of their noses seek consultation with facial plastic surgeons. Some are unhappy with the noses they were born with, and some with the way aging has changed their nose. For others, an injury may have distorted the nose, or the goal may be improved breathing. But one thing is clear: nothing has a greater impact on how a person looks than the size and shape of the nose. Because the nose is the most defining characteristic of the face, a slight alteration can greatly improve one's appearance.

If you have wondered how nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, could improve your looks, self-confidence, or health, you need to know how rhinoplasty is performed and what you can expect.

My nose has always been too big for my face. I definitely have no regrets about having my nose done. – Patient YD

THE PROCEDURE:

Rhinoplasty, also known as nose reshaping or a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance, proportions and balance of the nose including the nasal tip and nostrils. Aside from aesthetic appearance, surgery of the nose is often used to correct difficulty with breathing. A deviated septum causes breathing impairment which can be corrected by adjusting the nasal structure to improve alignment.

THE METHOD(S)

Rhinoplasty is performed two ways: an open procedure (open structure rhinoplasty), where an incision is made across the columella, the strip of tissue that divides the nostrils, or a closed procedure (internal approach rhinoplasty), a procedure of choice for Dr. Jones, whereby incisions are hidden inside the nose to reduce visible scaring. Typically, rhinoplasty surgery is performed within two to three hours.

In some cases Dr. Jones performs "non-surgical nose jobs" to alter minor cases by injecting facial fillers around the nose. Though this approach is more affordable and performed in less time than traditional rhinoplasty surgery, there are limitations to the procedure.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a non-smoking adult  in good physical health with realistic expectations. Candidates who consider rhinoplasty should be in their mid-teens to allow the nasal bone to mature and to ensure the development of the nose has stabilized.

RECOVERY / POSTOPERATIVE

  • Temporary bruising may extend to the eyes and other areas of the face
  • Nasal cast must be worn for seven to ten days
  • Nasal tampons may be placed in the nose for up to three days
  • Most bruising and swelling should disappear within two weeks
  • Return to work in seven to 10 days

Scar Revision

When the skin is in the process of recovering from an injury, whether the result of an accident, surgery, a burn, or acne, scarring will occur wherever multiple layers of the skin have been affected. Once a scar forms, it is permanent but may be made less visible or relocated surgically. With very few exceptions most people are self-conscious about facial scars. Some people may also experience diminished functioning of the eyes, mouth, or nose due to scarring. If you've wondered how facial scar revision could improve your appearance, your self-confidence, or your level of facial functioning, you need to know how scar revision works and what you can expect from this procedure.

I didn’t think it was possible to remove my scar but Dr. Jones did an amazing job. – Patient CSV

PROCEDURE

Scar revision is a surgical procedure to improve or reduce the appearance of scars. It also restores function and corrects disfigurement caused by an injury, wound or previous surgery.  Scars are formed when the skin is damaged in some way. Scars are permanent visible wounds and are unpredictable in their development.  Although a scar cannot be removed completely, Dr. Jones can improve the appearance of a scar by making them less noticeable.

METHOD

Many factors affect the severity of scarring including the size and depth of the wound, blood supply to the area, thickness and color of your skin, as well as the direction of the scar. If you are considering scar revision, it is important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon that can help you determine which procedure is best for you.

There are several treatment options which vary based on the type and degree of scarring, however, the Z-plasty is recommended. Z-plasty is a surgical technique that repositions a scar to more closely conform it to the natural lines and creases of the skin.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for scar revision surgery is a healthy individual of any age who would like to improve the appearance of scars anywhere on their body.  It is also beneficial if the candidate does not have active acne or other skin diseases in the area to be treated

RECOVERY / POSTOPERATIVE

  • Temporary discoloration or discomfort will occur in the first two weeks
  • Healing is expected to continue for several weeks
  • Dressings may be removed after one to two weeks post surgery
  • Minimal activity is advised post surgery
  • Use of scar products (i.e. Keloid Care) and massages to the affected area(s) are essential for individuals prone to thickened or keloid scars
