Eyelid Rejuvenation

Eye contact is very important for in business and social settings. Through the years men have realized the importance of their eyes and have requested blepharoplasty procedures more often to minimize the extra skin, hooding, puffiness, and sagging of their eyes.

Prior to visiting Dr. Jones I went to another doctor and was not happy with my results. Luckily Dr. Jones was able to correct my previous eye surgery. – Patient JL

THE PROCEDURE

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, removes the excess fat and drooping skin improves from the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both to rejuvenate your appearance.  The removal of fat deposits minimizes bags under the eyes and tightens the lower eyelid skin.

A few variations of blepharoplasty include:

  • Upper eyelid surgery, which removes excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids.
  • Eyelid lift surgery, which removes loose or sagging skin that creates folds on the upper eyelid or sometimes impairs vision.
  • Lower eyelid surgery, which removes excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid as well as correct droopiness of the lower eyelids; and bags under the eyes can be corrected by blepharoplasty.

METHOD(S)

Eyelid surgery usually takes from one to three hours, while the patient is under local or general anesthesia. Dr. Jones typically makes incisions in the creases of the upper lids and below the lashes of the lower lids. The incision lines for eyelid surgery are designed for scars to be well concealed within the eyelid region. Through these incisions, Dr. Jones will separate the skin from fatty tissue and muscle, remove excess fat and trim drooping skin and muscle. In instances where no skin must be removed, Dr. Jones may make an incision just below the lower lash line to remove excess fat, skin, etc.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for eyelid surgery is a non-smoking healthy individual.  The candidate should not have any predetermined serious eye conditions. The procedure is typically performed on adult men and women who have healthy facial tissue and muscles.  It is also important that the patient also has a realistic goal for improving of the eyelids and surrounding area.

RECOVERY / POSTOPERATIVE

  • Minimal postoperative pain
  • Temporary eyelid surgery swelling, bruising, irritation or dry eyes
  • Stitches removed within one week post surgery
  • Swelling subsides within 10 to 14 days
  • Vigorous activity resumed within three weeks

Male Liposuction

Many men find that dieting and exercise are good ways to lose weight and tone muscle; however, men often find it difficult to achieve the chiseled body they desire.  Fat deposits may conceal the toned muscles and make it difficult to get rid of fat in certain areas.

As a fireman, I have to be physically able to lift heavy weight. Removing some of the fat in my stomach makes a difference when I’m moving around. – Patient KB

THE PROCEDURE

The most popular areas for liposuction for men include: waist, abdomen, lower back, breast and neck. A key difference between liposuction for a man and a woman concerns the makeup of the fatty tissue itself. Adipose tissue in women is softer and less fibrous than tissue found in men. Therefore, liposuction for males presents greater physical demands on the performing surgeon.

THE METHOD(S)

Liposuction is performed in the same manner in male patients as it is in females. There are several approaches, including a tumescent method, which consists of a dilute anesthetic solution mixed with epinephrine that is injected into the area where liposuction is to be performed. This allows the extraction of large amounts of fat because of decreased blood loss and multiple areas can usually be done at the same time.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal liposuction patient is a healthy, non-smoking male who is interested in enhancing their masculine physique and muscle. Liposuction is an option for those who would like to remove excess fat deposits and have realistic expectations and goals for body contouring.

RECOVERY / POSTOPERATIVE

  • Adherence to post operative and recovery instructions are critical and mandatory
  • Wearing a girdle or under garment for up to 12 weeks may be necessary post surgery
  • Some supplements and vitamins are prohibited to reduce prolonged bleeding
  • Return to work within a few days to one week
  • Limited physical activity for up to two week

Male Breast Reduction

Although rarely discussed, enlarged male breasts is a common condition. Gynecomastia affects approximately 40 to 60 percent of men. In most cases, there is no known cause for the gynecomastia, although there has been correlation with various drugs, or medical conditions.

The extra fat in my chest was embarrassing and hard to get rid of from exercising. I should have done this years ago. – Patient DH

THE PROCEDURE

Male breasts (gynecomastia) typically occur at times of hormonal change, like puberty. As men become physically mature, gynecomastia disappears on their own.  However, for others they remain – possibly due to heredity, disease or the use of certain drugs.

THE METHOD(S)

Prior to surgery a detailed medical history and physical examination is performed to assess the underlying cause for gynecomastia. Depending on the particular case, Dr. Jones may correct gynecomastia through alternative medical treatments including the removal of glandular tissue.

The amount of glandular tissue present will determine the type of liposuction Dr. Jones feels is best for the patient.  Typically, there is a firm and tender mass of breast tissue beneath the areola that may need to be removed.

Gynecomastia techniques include:

  • Liposuction alone
  • Liposuction with breast gland removal
  • Liposuction, gland removal, and skin removal

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for male breast reduction surgery should be a healthy non-smoking adult with excess male breast fat, male breast gland, or both.  Breast reduction surgery is most commonly performed on young adult males, between 18 and 30 years of age.

RECOVERY / POSTOPERATIVE

  • Male breast reduction surgery can be performed within one to three hours
  • Patients should arrange for transportation from surgery
  • Home recovery for approximately for four to seven days before returning to work
  • Post-operative swelling will begin to improve after a week
  • Resume exercise and heavy lifting within three weeks

Nose Reshaping

There are many reasons why men seek rhinoplasty. Some of these reasons include narrowing the nose, removing a bump on the nose, creating a bridge, or opening their breathing passages. Most men who seek rhinoplasty do not wish to dramatically change their nose, instead are looking for subtle improvements.

I didn’t want a drastic change in my nose structure but it’s an obvious improvement to my face. – Patient EL

PROCEDURE

During the initial consultation, Dr. Jones will assess the structure of your nose in relation to the shape of your face, the thickness of your skin and your age. He will listen to your desired shape and goal followed by an examination to provide any suggestions for improvement based on his assessment of your nose, your goal, and your facial features.

METHOD(S)

Rhinoplasty is performed two ways: an open procedure (open structure rhinoplasty), where an incision is made across the columella, the strip of tissue that divides the nostrils, or a closed procedure (internal approach rhinoplasty), a procedure of choice for Dr. Jones, whereby incisions are hidden inside the nose to reduce visible scaring. Typically, rhinoplasty surgery is performed within two to three hours and each case is customized.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidates for male rhinoplasty are healthy, non-smoking men who have always been unhappy with their noses and some experiencing changes brought about by aging or injury. For other men, rhinoplasty is necessary to improve breathing.  Regardless of the cause, it’s imperative that the individual is looking for improvement, not perfection.

RECOVERY / POST OPERATIVE

  • Temporary swelling and bruising around the eyes
  • Nasal cast must be worn for seven to ten days
  • Nasal tampons may be placed in the nose for up to three days
  • Bruising may begin to fade within one week
  • Home recovery for approximately five to ten days
  • Resume strenuous activities within three weeks

Razor Bump Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal works by emitting pulses of laser energy to the hair follicles. This energy is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles, and they become disabled. Up to now, treating darker skin types has been a problem because darker skin absorbs enough of the laser energy to cause adverse side effects.

It saves me a lot of time not having to worry about shaving every other day. – Patient SL

To overcome this obstacle, the Candela GentleYAG laser is used. This technology delivers each pulse of laser energy to the skin over a longer period of time than other hair removal lasers. This longer delivery time (pulse width) minimizes the amount of heat that builds up in the skin but still allows enough heat to reach and disable the hair follicles. The Candela GentleYAG is effective on all skin colors (types 1-6).

Multiple treatments are generally required and depends on the color of your hair and skin, as well as factors such as hormone levels and hair follicle size.  The laser is effective on all skin tones and ethnicities; however, gray, white/silver, blonde and some shades of red hair cannot be treated.

The treated area may become slightly red and puffy; however, the reaction typically subsides within a day and you can return to normal activity immediately.
